Department of Transportation Training & SAP Services

The Department of Transportation regulations require ALL United States employers who provide (either direct or through contract), any form of transportation services, to implement alcohol and drug testing regulations for all safety sensitive personnel.

These employees must be drug tested according to the D.O.T. regulations.

If an individual tests positive under these rules, he/she must be referred to a Substance Abuse Professional [SAP] for assessment, referral to treatment and follow-up evaluation after treatment completion.  The referral to a SAP is required regardless of whether or not an individual will remain employed according to company policies.  This process also needs to occur if an individual tests positive for drugs on a pre-employment drug screen.

The D.O.T. rules also require that companies, whose business falls under these regulations, provide at least one hour of training for supervisors and one hour of training for employees regarding these rules.  The following is a list of required topics to be covered in these training sessions:

Supervisors:
·        Federal Drug Law
·        Alcohol/Drug Symptoms in the Workplace [including physical, behavioral, speech indicators of workplace impairment]
·        Documentation
·        Six Drug-Testing Categories
·        Confidentiality
·        Referral

Employees:
·        Review of D.O.T. Regulations
·        Effects of Drug/Alcohol Use on Personal Health, Safety, and Work Environment
